Unrelated, but of interest to some. It's been flying through the rumour mill that Thomas Roberts, the unfortunately gone from CNN Thomas Roberts is in talks with CBS, NBC, Paramount and Freemantle. It's also been said he's been auditioning for hosting gigs with certain unnamed game shows in LA. Hmm. Either way, I'm super excited to see what's going to happen next.

Gawker has some video of the Paris Hilton snark going on last night on 360.

CNN has made a huge mistake letting their anchors cover the story this way. Whether they like it or not, it's news. People want to hear about it, even if you don't. Either cover it, and cover it fairly, or don't cover it at all. It's a slippery slope from making fun of Paris Hilton to Lou Dobbs-style airing of personal opinion every night. Let's not go there, please.

Disclosure: I love Rufus Wainwright more than almost anything in the world. I remember with disturbing clarity the first time I heard April Fools, the exact moment I bought Poses, the crippling joy when my best-friend-cum-partner asked if I liked that Rufus Wainwright guy.

So, my first reaction upon hearing Rufus had said this (via Queerty):

If they stay in the closet, they’re going to make a lot more money. I go to the same gym as Anderson Cooper. When I look at him lifting those 5-pound weights, it makes me think, He’s just trying to live his life and be all that he can be. But he still goes to the gayest gym in New York.

Democratic debates were yesterday, and if you missed all six hours of coverage, and the subsequent rerun of four hours of coverage, you...well, you're didn't really miss anything, but you're less of a nerdface than I am.

Greta Van Susteren criticizes CNN's coverage of the debates for using only white men. Of course, had she actually watched the coverage, she would have seen Candy Crowley, Donna Brazile, and JC Watts. Elsewhere, there were some technical difficulties and bloggers getting arrested in the spin room.

And we get to do it all over again tomorrow night!

Anderson was lunching with Tom Ford yesterday, according to Page Six. Business or pleasure? Whatever, just videotape it.

Dear Thomas Roberts is living my dream in so many ways. Jetsetting from LA to NYC for reasons unknown (socialite, or job hunter?) and, most importantly, telling Michael Musto off. This from Musto's own column:

I didn't happen to win a Tony last week, but I did get a Tommy, and I want to thank God, my lighting designer, and CAA, but not in that order. See, a tall, handsome man approached me at Thursday night's Kino 41 dance party, smilingly suggesting I be nicer to him on TV. It turned out to be ex–CNN anchor THOMAS ROBERTS, who just happens to be the ideal man of everyone I've ever met. I guess he wasn't thrilled that I had smirkily called a certain swishy exchange on American Idol "the gayest TV since ANDERSON COOPER interviewed Thomas Roberts." Roberts—who publicly came out in '06—feels that his Cooper interview about his own experience having been molested as a youth was intentionally not about being gay. I didn't tell him I'd written a column at the time saying that for various reasons the gay issue should have been raised anyway and the distinction made. I simply chortled self-deprecatingly and assured Roberts that whatever I had said, I'm sure it was just silly shtick! And Roberts was so charming about it that I even laughed uncontrollably when he cracked that he would run up a bunch of drinks on my tab.

Way to back peddle, Musto! It got me to wondering if anyone else he's been severely critical of in the past has ended up all in his face. Musto reminds me of all those girls in junior high who would say things like I heard so-and-so has a GAY DAD or some other not-too-far-fetched half-truth, and when so-and-so says, Um, wtf? junior high girl just kind of looks at the floor and shuffles her feet around and mumbles something unintelligible.

So there's today's scathing media analysis: Michael Musto is a junior high school girl.

Investigative reporter Drew Griffin blogged about it. During the course of his investigation though, he got a ride on one of those swank planes and experienced just what the lawmakers get to, all on your dime as well. That'll show those fat-cats in Washington!

No, not the kind haughty district managers demand be straight and visible in retail hell, but of the book variety.

CNN Observations pegs Anderson as doing a book signing in Atlanta on May 18th, at, where else, the CNN Center. The book is going to paperback shortly, ensuring it will show up in airports and grocery stores everywhere!

It's totally sad that Thomas Roberts has left HLN. Many a weekend saw me up until 3am, wondering why in the hell he was relegated to overnights after six years at the network. There's plenty of opportunity in DC, however, and I'd gladly add another network into my viewing schedule to accommodate Thomas.

Up here in the vast wilds of Canada, the CBC made a decision not to show any of the media package the VA Tech shooter sent to NBC. CBC News Editor-in-Chief Tony Burman defends the decision, while NBC promises to cut down their coverage to roughly six minutes an hour. But that doesn't change the amount of coverage they gave the package yesterday, or the coverage every other news outlet gave it.

Everyone says they're dialing down the coverage now, but that fits nicely into the news cycle. Of course there wouldn't be as much coverage the day after, anywhere. No one should be patting themselves on the back.

Except maybe the CBC.

Apparently, John King will be hosting 360 again tonight, according to WHACNN. Strange, considering Anderson was mentioned to be en route last night. CNN has about 120 people deployed in the area, however, so we won't be lacking coverage.

TVNewser is all over Anderson getting $50 million a year for 5 years. So are Gawker, ETP, and hell, even Perez. Let's just whip out the ol' calculator and see how that breaks down. Hm. $10 million a year.

What in the world do you do with $10 million a year? Rappers generally encrust things with diamonds and gold-dip their toilets, while microscopic actresses/singers/hangers-on buy giant designer handbags that are bigger than they are and pay people to dress them. We know what we would do: gold-dipped, diamond encrusted go-go boys to carry our giant designer handbags.

Now Michael Musto is getting cover stories with his usual crap.

It's really maddening.

Disclosure: I'm a total fucking faggot. I don't need to get into the specifics, as they are vast and confounding, but as such, and in being part of many different queer-related communities ranging from gay to lesbian to trans, I will never understand this push to get all of the gays out of the closet. It makes us, as a community, seem vapid and stupid, like we'll only support the celebrities who press release their orientation and wear rainbow shorts every day of the week, not just on weekends.

It's not shameful to NOT slather your personal life all over the papers. A lot of straight celebrities don't blab about their private time, and no one gets their dander up about that. But if you're gay, the attitude is we need to know about it. We need names and numbers, dates and catalogs of reference. If you're gay, and fail to mention it in an interview, you're clearly ashamed of it.

And the worst part is, the more radical Michael Musto gets (and he's ramped it up in recent weeks) the more people seem to think he's speaking for us, like this is what we want

Michael Musto needs to stop picking on people. He's encouraging a new breed to gay journos who write their blogs from backwater towns and demand the heads of our 'closeted' celebrities so they can feel smug and proud if a single celebrity 'comes out.' They can point to their previous columns and articles and say I did that! Now I should be famous!

Stop it. Stop putting it on your covers. We're better than that.

Michael Musto is the Worst Person On Earth. In his new column for the Village Voice, he attacks the Thomas Roberts piece, but in a different sort of way. His usual tactic is to prod and poke celebs to come out, but, lo and behold, Thomas is already out. So, of course, he attacks the piece for not talking about Thomas being say, saying "by 14, Thomas was surely already gay—look at the photos."

It's entirely possible he missed the point of the whole special, and sat there with his little gay scorecard, waiting to award points based on mentions of the boyfriend's name, use of rainbow flags, and tightness of t-shirts. That must be why he didn't comment on how the story is promoting awareness of the lenience granted to convicted sex offenders, something other media outlets have been spending more time on, even since last week.

Sadly, Musto won't be happy until every gay, out or not, is wearing tiny shorts and dancing on top of bars, proclaiming him to be their king, shouting, "Thank you for outing us! Now lay in a pile of our big hard sweaty muscles!"

From snow to Southeast Asia

New Yorkers awoke this morning to a fresh blanket of snow. It was admittedly somewhat jarring. (Remember when you were a kid and snow was so exciting, at what age does it become annoying?)

I'm heading to Southeast Asia tomorrow morning, so there's always a lot of last minute stuff I have to do, and trudging through the snow just makes it that much harder. I've been getting shots for things I'd never even heard of, who knew you need a vaccine for Japanese Encephalitis? For years I never got shot when I traveled. I figured it wasn't worth the hassle. Considering my cameraman Neil was hospitalized after our recent Brazil trip (he'd been bitten by a spider according to one doctor) and my other cameraman Phil had some bug lay eggs inside him, I've decided to get all the shots I can, and I've promised myself I will actually take my malaria medicine with me this time.

We'll be in Southeast Asia next week broadcasting from a variety of locations. I went to school in Vietnam in the early 1990's but I've only been back to the region once since then. I went for the elections in Cambodia, and I'm looking forward to returning to see how the region has changed. We'll be reporting on environmental issues for our "Planet in Peril" series, but we'll also be looking at sex trafficking, in particular the trafficking of children, which is particularly bad in Cambodia.

We had our morning call earlier today, and there are a number of stories we are following for tonight's broadcast. The morning call is always interesting, folks call in from home or the gym or wherever they are to talk about what's happening today. You can usually hear a couple of kids in the background as producers try to maximize time with their families and get work done at the same time.

Plastered in the middle of our newsroom is this dry-erase board. It's where we lay out the day's show. The words "Ask Believe Receive" are written on the top. I think someone put it up there as a joke when we did a segment on "The Secret." No one's bothered to erase it yet.

Anyway, we were just meeting in front of what we call the "big board." And for now, it's a work in progress. That's okay, it's early. Usually, whatever we put on the board now gets changed later anyway. Still, there are some stories that will definitely make the cut.

One of them is Valerie Plame Wilson. The former CIA operative testified before Congress today and blamed the White House for blowing her cover. But is that true? The Washington Post had put out an editorial several years ago saying, Plame's husband was actually responsible for what happened to her career. I asked him about that a couple of weeks ago and he categorically denied it. We'll look at the facts and find out what exactly she was doing over at the agency.

Jeff Koinange has a fascinating profile about the very strange President of Gambia. This guy has no formal medical training, but he claims he can cure people of AIDS. Actually he claims he can only do it on certain days of the week. He says the treatment came to him in a dream.

From there, things get really bizarre. It's a really interesting story, the kind you won't see anywhere else.

Seriously weird.

The SF Chronicle has an interesting article about a journalism study, with a brief Anderson-as-brand mention:

The report said electronic media are in transition from what it calls the "Argument Culture," epitomized by the canceled CNN shoutfest "Crossfire," to the "Answer Culture," exemplified by the branded persona of CNN anchor Anderson Cooper and the exposure of child predators by NBC's "Dateline."

Lots of other interesting things regarding blogs and the rise thereof as well. Very worth checking out.

Of course, tonight is the Sins of the Father special, something that has us bawling for about a week straight. We've had eyes for that Thomas Roberts ever since he used to fill in for Mike Galanos on the old old Prime News Tonight. It's one thing to read articles about it, but it's another to actually hear him speaking about it. Seems like they're previewing the story this morning as well as Sunday morning, and there's been about a billion and two commercials. We're excited to see this sort of content on 360, and have stocked up on tissues.

Gentlemen, Behold!

Alright, here's the story as I heard it a few days ago.

A girl, very active in Anderson-related fandom to the point of writing fan fiction and posting to closed-communities, gets an interning job with CNN, 360 specifically. For some reason, girl thinks it's kosher to post about her experiences as an intern. We of the media know CNN frowns upon this, and has fired people for less.

But it wasn't just about her experiences as an intern, a lot of it was fangirl squealing about Anderson. One post went into detail about how she got to see Anderson bending over! And saw his bare back! For half an hour!

And yet, this blog claims her postings were entirely professional. They can say that, because this girl has carefully gone back and deleted all of her posts. Many of them were not professional, but as they are gone now, we don't have any proof. Smart girl.

CNN found her posts, though, and the community is apparently rocked by a spy in their midst! And so, they fired her. From her UNPAID job as an intern. And now she's sad. Aw.

So, I felt the need to call bullshit. Because this is dangerous. I'm sure CNN has enough creeps to wade through, resume-wise, but now they have to wonder how many of those people are crazy fans who are willing to report their comings and goings on the internet. At least they know they can find them, and weed them out, and prevent them from getting further jobs where the same thing will happen.

CNN had every right to fire this girl. As an intern, she should have known her grip on the job was tenuous at best. They don't have to give you any warning, one fuck up and you are gone. And I find it hard to believe that she didn't sign some sort of confidentiality agreement that would have prevented a saner person from posting their experiences. And as a member of some very active communities on the internet, she should have realised that there is no such thing as privacy.

It gives us, as fans of Anderson Cooper, a bad name. And that's why I'm upset. As a fan herself, this girl should have known the security surrounding him, the problems with stalkers. CNN doesn't know if she was rational or not, they just figure it's better for themselves to get rid of any threats.

And don't think I didn't see that dig at "blogs that are negative towards 360." There's a difference between being negative and being honest, and I am doing the latter. I don't enjoy watching 360 right now. I'd be a dirty liar if I said I did, and if I went to this blog everyday bouncing and happy. I do not. I am not that blind sort of fan who can just take her brain out to watch. If you are, maybe you're happier than I am, sure. But in the same way that 360 has that wonderful "Keeping Them Honest" segment, I would like to call the show on their bullshit too, and I think I do, sometimes.

This is all very much opinion today, make no mistake about it. Some things are facts, but as the posts I'm talking about have been deleted, there's no way to prove them. I've seen them, others have seen them, but I seem to be one of the few people speaking out about this, so I don't expect anyone to come forward and back me up.

I hope this girl is happy with the bad name she's giving each and every one of us. I hope you won't see her as some poor-little-girl, like they want you to believe. She is not. Fans getting jobs near the object of their obsession is dangerous. Maybe one day, these people will realise why CNN did what they did.

Now it's the Houston Voice, that leading publication in the...okay, we've never heard of it either. Apparently, the March issue of Out has a gossipy column by Josh Kilmer-Purcell that totally dishes. On stuff that happened ten years ago. Here's a peek, typos included.

"When I spent a couple of weeks observing ABC's 'World New Tonight' fpr am advertising campaign a decade ago, it was common knowledge in the newsroom even then that Anderson was gay (at the time he was a news correspondent for ABC). Anderson's sexual orientation became even more apparent when one evening he introduced me in a gay bar to the man he was currently dating — most likely as an excuse to stop my drunken propositioning, but still..."

And of course, Koval of the Houston Voice cites that fount of wisdom, Kevin Naff of the Washington Blade, famous entirely for his previous bashings of Cooper. Apparently, not outing yourself in a press release while wearing tiny glittery shorts means you're "..letting all of us lesser gay mortals do the heavy lifting in our fight for equality."

Sigh. Please take note, we aren't all douchebags. This is just seems to be an easy target topic right now amongst self-righteous queers who think they're better than the rest of us.

Oh ho, lots and lots.

First off, the words that were secretly whispered to our closest circle of CNN nerdfriends have come true. Kiran Chetry has indeed usurped Erica Hill as the 360 update girl. This leaves a bad taste in our mouth, and we pray it doesn't stick. Because, quite frankly, ew. Just ew.

Keith Olbermann is still all snappy and witty and agreeable. We love everything he says.

Anderson Cooper: "...He is the only person who has not been informed that he is a marketing experiment."

Glenn Beck: "A wolf in sheep's clothing. A very dangerously bigoted guy who's selling himself as a pragmatic philosopher. I don't think he sees his own bigotry. There's something about him that suggests one night he will say something that costs him his career in television."

Nancy Grace: "Anybody who would embellish the story of their own fiance's murder should spend that hour a day not on television but in a psychiatrist's chair. Really."

Ah, the glory of the opinionated newsman. We wish for more of you, Keith! And also, digital cable to watch you upon, instead of just for the few weeks out of the year we spent at the boyfriend's. Ahem.

And then there was Daniel Craig + Anderson Cooper. A resounding yes, and please videotape.

John Gibson hates Anderson for covering real news, which hits hard to anyone who doesn't give a fuck about Anna Nicole. Ouch? Meanwhile, Jon Klein defends the amount of time CNN spent on the story. And somewhere, Jack Cafferty shivers, but doesn't quite know why.

We here at EDC love Keith Olbermann a lot. And we sort of knew this day would come, even though he seemed to take CNN's side in the whole Greta v. Cooper business a few weeks ago. And he's a smart man, with a lot of valid points.

So, we don't mind when he says it should be a national holiday when 360 has 22 minutes of news a night. [via TVNewser] Because, we sort of know it's true, although exaggerated.

Though, we wonder if this was old 360, 7pm pre-K 360, would he have anything to complain about? They had strikingly similar shows, back then.

It's well known, however, that Anderson doesn't like the two hour format, and it is a bit much. No one else gets two hours, and there might be a reason for that, and for all the second hour specials. It's a lot of time to fill up. But is a return to the old 360, the irreverent, fun, quirky 360 the way to go?

We'd like to see what Olbermann does with a two hour version of Countdown, we really would.

Anyway, TVNewser has CNN's retaliatory ad that itself is a snarkfest:
It's Called Journalism. I'd like to change some punctuation, however, to make it read, It's Called, Journalism? because if we're going to be catty bitches via print ads, we might as well go full force.

CNN.com is telling us 360 tonight will once again be "Oprah's Promise" which makes me sort of want to claw my eyes out. But, good news, everyone in the Newsroom is saying 360 is about missing children! I can't help but wonder if this somehow involves Oprah, too.

Everything is Oprah.

I'm not ragging on Oprah, she's done some very wonderful things. It just reminds me a little too much of the weeks of Angelina Jolie we all lived through last year. We made it out just fine, but we were all a little less...enthusiastic afterwards.

Now, to other things, namely, a recent Larry King interview from B&C. He says:

On the other hand, he indicated that a major news event that would show off Couric's strengths could change the public's perception of her. "Hurricane Katrina made Anderson Cooper," he remarked. "It could happen to Katie that way."

Does a major news event make an anchor, or does the anchor make the major news event? Is every anchor or reporter just waiting for that magic story that will make them a household name? It's sort of trite to examine the news that way, but that's sort of what I do, upon reflection. I wonder who they're going to send to Colorado! when I hear about an avalanche, or why did so-and-so get to cover that? which is generally what I say whenever Rick Sanchez covers anything.

It's been a while since I've watched the news for just the news, and there's no going back. Hence all the media analysis that I read, love, and do.

And that's fine.

Of course, since I started and subsequently stopped this blog, there have been about - and this just an estimate - a gabillion new Anderson-related blogs. And that's the rub, that they are Anderson-related, as in skeezy personal details and speculation about new suits or vacations.

While we all know I'm not above gossip, I tend to be ironic. That won't go, all sense of cattiness will forever be retained.

But I'm going for more of an analysis sort of business here, because that's what I like to do. So, I'll do it.

I knit. I knit a lot. When I'm neglecting this blog, it's mostly because I'm knitting or doing something yarn-related. And then there's the mounds of hours I spend with the news. Contrary to what you might think, these two go together well, especially if you can knit and read at the same time.

Naturally, I get excited when I can worm knitting into a conversation (or post) about world events. Behold, Peace Fleece.

Tim McGraw and Faith Hill were featured quite prominently this week on 360. Kelly Clarkson adopted a puppy. But sometimes better stories come from lesser known celebs. New Orleans resident Ani DiFranco was one of the "wave of ne'er-do-wells" who left at the absolute last minute, and she spoke with Deanna Zandt of Alternet about her post-K impression of the city.

...the news reports started rolling in, and later we just started panicking, thinking, "Oh my God, we left all the master tapes …" We were in the middle of my record, we were in the middle of the new Hamell on Trial record, and my partner is also a record maker, so there was no end to the masters we'd left behind in New Orleans. We decided, "All right, we gotta go get 'em."

So we got into my friend's mother's Toyota Corolla and drove into town from Lafayette. I must say, it was incredibly easy. There were maybe about four or five roadblocks along the way. I mean, you had about eight guys trying to lock down the city. It was an impossibility. Every time they would say, "Get off at the next exit, ma'am," we would say, "Sure," and keep going.

We cruised right into town, and saw not one Army truck, not a single National Guard person, no FEMA people, nothing. No one. The storm hit Monday morning, and this was Thursday afternoon. Flooding, absolute flooding, craziness. Devastation, people on their roofs, and we saw nobody there to help. And any reports of "you can't get in there" were, I can tell you, bullshit. We couldn't believe this was the United States of America. I felt more naive than I have in a long time. We just saw a lot of poor, mostly dark-skinned people abandoned, thirsty, hungry, roaming the streets, under and on bridges … it was insane.

There were all these reports that they were not even letting people walk over the bridge. People without cars or credit cards who attempted to evacuate on foot, they were turning them around on the bridge. People would come from the Ninth Ward in droves from their flooded, devastated neighborhoods to the National Guard station on the levy, and they were turned away at gunpoint, like, "Get the fuck outta here."

A year, as of today, since I've been (admittedly, on and off) writing this wonderous blog. You'll notice I slacked hardcore last week, because I was afraid of the cattiness if I did keep updating. CNN is on a real short leash with me, 360 included.

And today, is a perfect example of why!

"American Heroes Rebuilding the Gulf." Faith Hill and Tim McGraw tell Anderson how they're giving back to the coast. Tune in for this special edition of "Anderson Cooper 360°" on Wednesday at 10 p.m. ET.

Happy place, happy place. Where there is news, and not just celeb interviews.

Nothing else yet, I'm just up early.

And thinking. How much do you really care about the news on 360? Enough to be interested in hearing some stories expanded on, daily? Basically, I'm looking to up the content on the blog so I actually have more of a reason to update every day.

My Dearest CNN:

You are killing me.

I am well aware that the Angelina Jolie interview is a Huge Scoop for you. I'm very happy for you, CNN, really. I was a little wary about the amount of commercials you played, a week before the thing even aired, but hey, it's business. And then, the previews. A preview isn't 'exclusive' if you play it on every show, is it? You know I hate to give kudos to Lou Dobbs, but he refused to touch the subject. Of course, if it isn't about super-fences designed to kill Mexicans with lasers, he won't. Nonetheless, reluctant kudos.

And then Tuesday came, and I thought it would be over. I watched it, of course. It was...boring. You got good ratings, nicely done. But that wasn't the end of it, was it? No. It had to be further discussed on every other show you had, and summarized for days.

Friday, the reruns started. I know the Friday 360 track record is not very good. Not many live shows, and if it is live, the last hour is almost always a pretaped "special edition." It must be nice to have the power to take Fridays off all the time, and not report the news.

But it didn't stop at Friday, oh no. Saturday afternoon. Saturday night. Sunday.

All told, you have thus far, played 11 reruns of the Angelina Jolie interview, in place of things like, THE NEWS.

I wish I could say it was just with this one interview, but darling CNN, you're failing me on so many levels. I remember a time when a single story wasn't rerun on every show. Some stories are important, yes. But some (namely, anything Rick Sanchez covers*) are not.

Now, maybe normal people aren't up in arms about this, but I happen to watch a staggering amount of CNN. And when I can't stand CNN anymore, I switch to HLN. I don't have the luxury of other cable news channels. I suspect if I had MSNBC, I might have the same problem. After all, I am rabidly in love with Keith Olbermann, and Tucker Carlson, but only with the sound down.

What I'm trying to say is: CNN, there is news to cover somewhere. There is a direction you have to go towards. Jon Stewart, as usual, is right. It doesn't matter what you're talking about with the celebrity, it is still a celebrity interview.

Pull up your socks before I get digital cable, CNN. Don't base your schedule around one poorly-done interview.

It was a holiday yesterday, yo.

And of course there was Oprah today, heavily covered by Gawker. Having just heard the book, I agree, there was nothing new. It seemed word for word. Kind of frustrating. So, the big news, as if you haven't heard already, is Anderson's permanently hosting Newsnight, which is now called 360, and is two hours forever, 10pm-12am. Aaron's gone, which makes me very sad, and the Situation Room moves to 7pm.
